Brenda Mallory is primarily known as a sculpture and installation artist, mining natural materials and mimicking organic processes with her generative installations. Texture and repeated rhythmic forms, often derived from nature or forms of weaving, are central features of Mallory's abstract compositions. Her 2015 GLEAN Residency in Portland, Oregon, which provided her the opportunity to glean materials from the region's garbage and recycling system, spurred incredible creative innovation in her work. At Crow's Shadow, for example, she utilized corrugated cardboard packing materials as stencils in some of her prints. A longtime Portland resident, Mallory has recently begun to garner more national attention, particularly as a recipient of a prestigious 2015 Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship and a 2016 Native Arts and Culture Foundation Fellowship. |
