Biography |
Jacob Lawrence is well-known for his depictions of the experiences of African Americans and, often, for his statements of protest. He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1917 and moved to New York City at the age of 13. In New York, he was greatly influenced by the art created in his Harlem neighborhood. Lawrence began taking classes at the Harlem Art Workshop and earned a scholarship to study at the Harlem Community Art Center. There, he developed a style that he called "dynamic cubism" which drew heavily from the art in Harlem at that time. In 1970, Lawrence moved to Seattle and became a professor at the University of Washington. He lived in the Pacific Northwest until his death in 2000. |
